USED FURS

Can't part with your old fur, but you don't want to spend a lot of money remodeling it? You probably already know that furs make great blankets and throws, when you're cozy on the couch on a cold winter's night. But they can also make comfy pillows, decadent coverings for footstools or ottomans and, for that matter, replace any other type of upholstered cover on furniture.

Transfurmation (R) specializes in producing recycled furs for home furnishings. Not only does company founder and designer Mary Beth Hayes sell her creations made from recycled fur; she will take your used fur and remodel it into one of her many styles.

Except for rabbit and chinchilla, she can use any type of used fur. She prefers certain fur types for certain designs, such as mink and seal for pillows, persian and mongolian lamb for footstools and fox and sable for trimmings.

This is probably your best bet for old leopard or ocelot coats. Since it is illegal to buy and sell coats from endangered species, even when they are old and used, and you probably wouldn't feel comfortable wearing them, Hayes recommends turning it into an ottoman. ñYou don't want to just throw it away, but it doesn't do any good hanging in the back of the closet,î says Hayes. ñAn ottoman is a great solution, especially because the markings are so beautiful in this form.î

Prices for home furnishing remodels range from $75 to $150 for pillows and $85 to $175 for a footstool. Allow four to eight weeks for production time.
